  • Do not rush the brushing of teeth. Take at least two minutes to clean the teeth twice a day. 
  • Using the brush has an essential technique for proper cleaning. Instead of holding the straight brush parallel to your teeth, tilt the head at an angle (preferably at around 45 degrees). 
  • The most common mistake while choosing a brush is selecting a stiff bristle brush. However, the best choice is to choose a soft brush that will not damage your enamel. Replace your toothbrush or the head (if you have an electric one) after three months. You can choose to get a replacement sooner if the bristles are becoming irregular. 
  • Additionally, use fluoride-based toothpaste for shiny teeth and healthy gums.

Therefore, most dentists recommend flossing your teeth at least once a day. You may feel like using dental floss is infuriating, but it is totally worth it. Let’s understand how to use dental floss properly for best results.

  • It is crucial to spend proper time flossing. Skimping is tempting after you brush, but the real benefit lies in being diligent. 
  • Break a considerable length of floss and gently rub it between your teeth. Try to curve it towards one tooth before it touches your gums. The edges of the floss can put pressure on your teeth. Therefore, the curve will prevent the soft skin from damage.
  • Clean each tooth one by one and keep using the clean part of the floss for the next tooth.
  • If flossing is not convenient for you, using a water flosser, dental pick, or wedge plaque remover can also help.

Symptoms of Oral Health Issues

Your gums show the first symptoms when you are close to suffering a dental issue. Swelling of the gums or redness near the edges of teeth indicates oral health issues. Other symptoms include bleeding gums when brushing teeth, receding gums that expose the roots of teeth, and unusual pain while chewing food. Once the teeth start to lose their outer layer, known as dentin, they become sensitive to hot and cold. Permanently bad breath or a foul taste also indicates the start of an oral health issue. If you are suffering from any issue, you should book an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible. Early detection of such problems is crucial to get the proper treatment.

Researchers believe that clogged arteries and other cardiovascular issues cause harmful bacteria or germs to flow in the blood. As a result, oral bacteria also gradually increases and causes inflammation in gums and other periodontal diseases.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia doesn’t cause any oral health complications, but poor oral hygiene can cause pneumonia. When you have germs and harmful bacteria present in your mouth, you can inhale them through the mouth. Therefore, the chances of an infection in the lungs increases multiple times. Pneumonia is one of the significant problems that can arise when the lungs are not working correctly.

Diabetes

Diabetic patients lose their immunity to infections and put their bodies at risk. Therefore, people who suffer from diabetes are more susceptible to gum diseases. On the other hand, people with periodontal disease are more likely to develop diabetes because gum disease causes blood sugar levels to deregulate. Our jawbones are also affected by Osteoporosis, and it causes the teeth to fall prematurely because of weak gums. Patients who have Osteoporosis are also more likely to get jawbone damage quickly.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s causes patients to lose their memory and brain function slowly, and it doesn’t cause oral health issues directly. However, researchers have noticed that poor oral health is a signal of the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Pregnancy and Birth Complications

Premature birth and low birth weight are primary reasons for periodontal diseases in the long run. There are cases of patients suffering from oral irregularities because of birth complications. Additionally, prematurely born babies are more likely to develop immune system disorders which cause dental issues.

More Oral Health Care Tips

  • Using a mouthwash after brushing and flossing the teeth ensures that no bacteria or germs are present in your mouth. 
  • Do not use toothpicks and sharp objects on your teeth. You may feel a sense of temporary relief, but the outer layer of teeth suffers irreparable damage.
  • Using tobacco (chewing or smoking) also causes oral health issues. Therefore, consider quitting the habit of using tobacco.
  • Limit the consumption of sugar and switch to a healthy diet.
  • Finally, schedule regular appointments with a dentist to keep track of your oral health.
